Haydn Gambling graduated in 1989 from Adelaide’s School of Physiotherapy with a sense that there had to be more to manual therapy than just than mobilisation and manipulation. Having been introduced to muscle energy, counterstrain and cranial techniques while working in the US and then meeting Mark Elford, also an Adelaide graduate who learnt visceral manipulation while working in Europe, they co-founded Manual Therapy Institute in 1999 to share their knowledge with their colleagues. The original course – “Patterns of Dysfunction” was a four-part series taught in Australia and UK which covered all of these techniques. With the founding of Jones Institute Australasia in 2014 and as counterstrain evolved to supersede many of the other techniques, the courses offered by Manual Therapy Institute also changed to focus on bridging the widening gap that was appearing between graduating therapists skill base and the advanced counterstrain training offered by Jones Institute. Our mission now is to give therapists the foundational knowledge, skills and support to successfully advance on a complete pathway from novice to outstanding, niche practitioner.
